By Tisha DavisDerek Ametam and Joe Wanzala

This is the second post in a multi-part blog series on using the dtSearch software. It guides you through configuring user preferences.

Setup/Preferences

After you install dtSearch, there are a few settings we recommend changing.[1] These changes will stay in place on that computer going forward. If you installed dtSearch on additional computers using the same license key, the settings on each computer will need to be changed in the same way.

dtSearch Guide – Part I: Introduction to dtSearch

By Tisha Davis, Derek Ametam and Joe Wanzala

This is the first post in a multi-part blog series on using the dtSearch software. It provides an introduction to dtSearch.

What is dtSearch?

dtSearch is a software program that allows you to search large amounts of text quickly. It does this by building indexes based on the words it finds in each file you point it to, creating a word index that it continues to refer to with each search. It can be used to search entire folders of data that contain different file types. There are two steps to using dtSearch. Step 1 is building an index. Step 2 is searching it. It is a simple and effective tool for searching discovery, creating brief banks, and viewing different file types even if the associated program is not installed on your computer.

dtSearch and Cloud Storage

By Brian Brunelle

Will dtSearch work with data hosted within cloud storage solutions such as Box, DropBox and OneDrive?

The short answer is: possibly.

dtSearch[1] is designed to work with localized content stored on disks that are visible through the Windows file system. Essentially this means that dtSearch will be able to index files that are saved to the local hard disk installed in your computer (or a connected USB disk drive).

dtSearch User Preferences

When you first open dtSearch the window layout and user preferences will be using the programs default settings.  We’ve found that modifying certain settings will increase the search capabilities and will make navigating and working with the program easier.  The system will remember your preferences so you only have to modify these settings once.

By default, the program is set to search document content, but not file or folder names and there are times when searching file and folder names can be helpful.  Additionally, the search results screen uses a top-bottom layout (the list of results will be on the top with a document preview on the bottom).  Since most documents have a portrait orientation, a side-by-side layout is generally easier to work with.  With Adobe Acrobat documents, there is an additional plug-in needed to be able to navigate through search results within the same document.

dtSearch Desktop Demonstration Video

dtSearch is a popular search and retrieval program. Here is a brief 12 minute video that demonstrates how to setup a new dtSearch index and how to run searches within an index.

As mentioned in the dtSearch Desktop post, we have been able to obtain a limited number of licenses that will be made available to CJA panel attorneys with current, active cases.  To request a license go to the dtSearch Desktop post and fill out the request form on the bottom.

Note: like most litigation software programs, this program was developed for Windows-based operating systems and does not work with Macintosh operating systems.
